MBI’s senior management team is composed of a group of seasoned veterans with significant knowledge and expertise in bacterial genetics, molecular biology, metagenomics and bioinformatics.
Patrick Ang has over 25 years of finance and management experience in entrepreneurial and multinational corporate settings. He began his career in the life sciences over 10 years ago, successfully introduced next generation bioinformatics products to the Canadian market, and has since been active in pursuing opportunities in developing nascent and innovative technologies within the genomics field. Patrick is a CPA from the state of Alabama and received his Master’s in Accounting from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Trevor Charles, Ph.D.
CSO & Co-Founder
Trevor Charles brings three decades of experience in bacterial genetics, molecular biology and metagenomics. His undergraduate studies in Microbiology were done at University of British Columbia, followed by Ph.D. at McMaster University, Postdoc at University of Washington, and first faculty appointment at McGill University. He was President of the Canadian Society of Microbiologists form 2009-2010, and is currently Professor in the Department of Biology at University of Waterloo.
He has broad and diverse research interests and activities, including plant-microbe interactions, symbiotic nitrogen fixation, functional metagenomics, novel enzyme discovery, polyhydroxyalkanoate bioplastics, bacterial chromosome engineering, synthetic biology, and human gut microbiome.
Nadia Mykytczuk, Ph.D.
Senior VP, R&D Applications
Dr. Mykytczuk has worked in mining microbiology for over 10 years. She currently holds an NOHFC Industrial Research Chair in Biomining, Bioremediation, and Science Communication in the School of the Environment at Laurentian University. She holds degrees from Carleton and Laurentian University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at McGill University working on microbial communities in the Canadian High Arctic. Her research portfolio includes a focus on mining related microbial applications including genomics of individual bioleaching bacteria through to community characterization and functioning in various mine waste applications and polluted environments.
Jiujun Cheng, Ph.D.
Director of Technology Applications
Dr. Cheng is a high-throughput sequencing expert. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Wales, UK, and has over 25 years of experience in microbiology and molecular biology. He has extensive experience in sample preparation and amplicon and metagenomic sequencing.
Michael Lynch, Ph.D.
Director of Bioinformatics
Dr. Lynch leads our bioinformatics efforts. Michael received his Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo. He has more than seven years experience in microbiome analysis (amplicon and metagenomic) and design and implementation of analysis pipelines. Dr. Lynch is the key architect of Metagenom-1©, a proprietary bioinformatics framework of algorithms.
John Heil, Ph.D.
Director of Microbials
Dr. Heil is a specialist in inoculant product development and microbial strain construction. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Waterloo. He has expertise in the development and implementation of bacterial genome engineering methods, and designing and building bacterial strains.
